BOB LEAHY INTERVIEWS ONE OF THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL FIGURES IN GAY PORN – THE BOY NEXT DOOR WITH A PENCHANT FOR NO-HOLDS BARRED SEX, OUTED LAST YEAR AS HIV-POSITIVE AND VIRTUALLY EXPELLED FROM THE BUSINESS
Boy next door/slut. Mason Wyler straddles the two beautifully. Wholesome looking and wicked dirty at the same time.
He has plenty of fans and plenty who revile him too. This boy has led a controversial life, made controversial films, said many controversial things. Some have called him a publicity hound. I think he just likes to talk, is amused by it all. Certainly he had no problem with our request for an interview. “Yes” he replied breezily when I emailed him. “I would love to do an interview for y’all. Feel free to ask anything. I’m an open book.”
Who is Mason Wyler? Born in 1984 in Seattle, he’s now living in Dallas Texas with his partner of seven years. He’s 5’10”, blond hair blue eyes, boy next door type, likes to work out. Versatile bottom. Seven or eight inches, depends where you read. Uncut. He was once a grade two school teacher.
The Gay Erotic Video Index lists him in over fifty porn movies/DVDs, with titles ranging from Campus Pizza toBareback Filthy Piss Pigs. He’ll do anything - known fior that, in fact. Some of the latter titles are boxed video productions from an online studio Next Door Studios, with whom he found his own home Mason Wyler.com which generated weekly offerings to internet subscribers featuring an enthusiastic Mason in solo, duo and group scenes.
Wyler was plunged in to controversy last year. Said Gay Porn Times in August 2010 when he announced he was HIV+ “Wyler joins a tiny handful of men—among them Cole Tucker and Jeff Palmer to disclose their HIV-positive status while actively working as a model. “I feel I’ve become kind of the face of HIV in the porn world for this moment in time,” Wyler says. “Now I feel like my name, my face and my body will be associated with that, but I don’t know how it would affect sales” or job offers, he notes. “It’s all up to the studios and what they think and, I mean, as long as my scene partners know my status and hopefully are positive themselves. Condom porn, I would go for it.” . . .Wyler addressed certain additional rumors in a blog posting this past Friday. “Since testing positive in May, I have hooked up with a total of three people and they were all HIV-positive themselves,” he writes. “Seriously. I have not gone around fucking, barebacking, or infecting HIV-negative people. I am a sex fiend. I am not a monster. So to the people who are spreading rumors that I have done otherwise, stop… You have already done enough damage.”
He’s won admirers of his body of work here at PositiveLite.com. Writer Michael Burtch, in a July 2011 opinion piece (watch the videos at the end of that post, by the way) said this about him. “ Mason Wyler has quickly become one of my favourite, openly HIV+ porn stars. When he writes “I don’t need someone to talk too, I need someone to fuck me” on his blog or summons up the complexities of HIV by succinctly stating “it sucks”, I totally get where he’s coming from and toast his post-AIDS sensibility.”
Michael adds “Mason Wyler is, and always has been a person of value, a survivor, and he deserves to be applauded, not jeered and degraded for discussing his status openly and honestly. For all their talk over the years about helping to curb HIV infections, it’s not the Chi Chi La Rue’s or Michael Lucas’s who are making any difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It’s people like Mason Wyler, who challenge public perception about HIV and sexuality, that are the real fucking heroes.”
Bob Leahy: First of all Mason, a huge thank you for doing this interview. Now as a fellow poz guy, I’ve got to ask you, how are you doing? Staying healthy? Feeling good?
Mason Wyler: I am doing well. Soon after I tested poz I found a caring HIV Doctor and I do a check up every month. Thankfully, I’m in good shape and feeling great.
You’ve been described over and over as one of the best performers in the business. Why were you so good at what you do? Where did it come from?
I am a natural born slut. I enjoy sex so much I tend to say I’m addicted. Porn just seemed like the right place for me. I don’t think I was a good performer. In fact, I think there are plenty of porn models who were leaps and bounds ahead of me in terms of abilities and stage presence… But I will say this, no one enjoyed it more than I did.
You’ve described yourself with names like “total slut” and “sex addict” before. Overall, has being those things been good for you?
I am happy with where I’m at. Despite everything, I’m a very lucky guy and I’m grateful for every experience I’ve had thus far.
On screen, you are known for bottoming – the ultimate bottom in fact, who will do anything. But what about your personal life? Are you just as wild?
I’m just as wild if I am put in wild situations. The thing is, I’m currently living in the suburbs, I hate to drive, and I don’t put much effort into my social life. I don’t go to the gang-fucks but if the gang-fucks came to me… I wouldn’t say no.
You tested positive in May 2010. Between then and when you were outed that August, your studio – Next Door – who knew you were positive, relegated you to making solo jack-off scenes. What did that feel like?
I went from bright lights and big productions to sitting alone in my computer room masturbating for a paycheck. It was easy money and I was grateful to still have a job. But it was the first time since entering porn that I was doing something just for the money. And for the record, I hate playing on webcam. Even if I’m watching some other hottie. It’s so boring. If I’m going to jerk-off, I’ll watch porn, by myself, and be done with it in a minute. I don’t want to have to help someone else masturbate. It’s called self-service for a reason.
I want to talk about how the news got out out that you were HIV-positive. Last summer there was some gossip going the rounds and then in August 2010 you were publically outed as poz by a rag called GayPornGossip. I think you made THE announcement the next day. How did you feel about the way the news came out?
I don’t like being put on the spot. I don’t think anybody does. I was both flattered and annoyed that it got talked about by so many different people on numerous gossip blogs and gay news websites. It did have a silver lining though, it helped me realize that I have nothing to be ashamed about and that I definitely was not alone. After the news broke out, it spread so far that I had poz people all over the world reach out to me.
Making that announcement must have been very traumatic. But was it also a relief?
Making the announcement actually wasn’t traumatic. I get over things fairly quickly.
Afterwards, you were still trying to stay in the porn business, but it sounds like the doors were shutting pretty fast. But why didn’t Treasure Island (who are known for bareback porn), for instance, sign you up? Someone at the time described you as a “bareback studio’s dream”.
I had actually spoken with Treasure Island numerous times over the course of my porn career. I do love nasty bareback sex and so I thought I might be a good fit for their company. Treasure Island is for 100% anything-goes sex pigs. Men who will fuck anyone regardless of looks – as long as it’s bareback. I respect that. But I can’t have sex with people I am not at least physically attracted to. My taste is fairly broad and I found some of their guys to be extremely hot. But either those guys didn’t want to work with me or Treasure Island didn’t want to pair me with them. Treasure Island prides themselves on filming real men having real sex. I suppose they thought by giving me a say on who I’d work with that it would make the sex too orchestrated. Ultimately, I chose not to work with them.
You’ve talked a lot about bareback porn before but tell us whether you think there is a link between people watching BB porn and actually doing it at home.
Not at all. Porn is a form of entertainment. It doesn’t and shouldn’t have any more influence on someone’s actions than say… music, movies, or video games. I think most guys participate in bareback sex in some capacity regardless of what porn they watch. We’re only human.
So you took a long period off. But then just recently you shot a scene for Falcon Studios which is to be released shortly, and another withRiley Price. What’s behind that? You’ve made it clear it’s not a come-back, right?
They offered. I accepted. A porn career, like any entertainment career, hinges on whether the producers want you or not. It’s out of my hands.
So after porn, what next?
The street corner.
Ha! Some say testing positive is the best thing that ever happened to them, some say the worst. Where are you on that scale – with 0 being the worst thing and 10 being best? Explain.
It’s probably the worst thing that has ever happened to me. But I have found something that most gay men will never find and it makes everything, including having HIV, seem like no problem at all. HIV isn’t the end of the world. Especially when your world is the love of your life.
Mason. Thank you so much for doing this. We love your attitude. Keep well, keep loving and keep it wild!
